Gilbert Murray Hall was founded in 1957. The Hall was based upon a number of large houses built at various times in the first quarter of the century and is near to the University's playing fields. These houses were substantially augmented with the opening, in 1965, of seven blocks of study bedrooms.

Stamford Hall comprises buildings designed in 1964 by Sir Denys Lasdun (a leading architect, responsible also for the Charles Wilson Building on the University's main site and many other major buildings including the National Theatre); four adjacent older houses and Bowder Court which opened in October 1992.

All bedrooms provide comfortable single accommodation, with writing desk, internet access, a welcome toiletries pack, and tea and coffee making facilities. A welcome leaflet is also provided detailing emergency contact numbers and useful information.

Gilbert Murray Stamford Hall is located on our 40 acre site, Oadby, complete with beautiful landscaped grounds and a stunning 16 acre botanic garden suitable for outdoor activities. Oadby is a delightfully picturesque area only 2 miles from the City Centre.

Grounds and gardens

Gilbert Murray Stamford Hall is a short walk from our botanic garden.

The Harold Martin Botanic Garden spans 16 acres of lovingly cultivated grounds with origins dating back to 1920. The horticulture, spectacular in itself, is also amazing in its variety, containing the national plant collections of Hardy Fuchsia, Skimmia, Lawson Cypress and Aubrieta. For those unfamiliar with the names, sight alone is enough to convey the special nature of the plants and flowers.

The grounds are perfect for a pleasant walk and there are benches for those who simply wish to relax and admire the surroundings. The idyllic garden setting also plays host to several events throughout the year, including the very popular ‘sculpture in the garden’ event which displays some remarkable sculptures from world renowned artists throughout the summer months.

Other facilities

A free internet connection is available in all bedrooms using the port next to the telephone. A network cable is required which can be hired from reception. Wi-Fi is available in most public areas within all the Halls at the Oadby site.

A telephone with pay-as-you-go service is also provided (cards can be purchased from reception).
